IGY

In September of 1982 Donald Fagen released his debut solo album “The Nightfly”. It featured the song “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” as it’s first track.

IGY, which stands for International Geophysical Year, was a multi-national scientific project circa 1957-1958. This was a time period of early space exploration, an expanding futuristic science fiction scene and a growing expectation that science and engineering could solve the world’s problems. The song, IGY, can be viewed as a hopeful echo of that same time period, or as a sarcastic commentary on the failure of science to solve society’s problems.

This particular line in the IGY lyrics caught my fancy: A just machine to make big decisions Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision. This idea seems quaint in the current era of companies run amok, social engineering, trolling, doxing and so forth. Still, I believe it’s an admirable goal we should all strive to achieve.
